Caulking a Crack in a Fireplace Wall Fireplace caulking is a little different than caulking around a bathtub, for example. The goal of caulking a fireplace crack is not only to cover the crack but also to force the mortar compound into the crack.
Mortar joints also crack from expansion during use and contraction after every fire. Excessive heat results from building a fire that is too big for the firebox. Too much heat wears out the firebrick and the mortar, causes cracks and other damage, and is generally an unsafe practice.
Most mortar is fireproof to some extent. The materials of clay, cement, lime and sand are naturally resistant to fire and heat. However, there is a formula for mixing mortar that will not only resist fire, but it will also resist heat damage as well.
High alumina cement is used in all construction work including outside pizza oven. There are several advantages of using alumina cement in making pizza oven instead of any other ordinary cement.
Caulk should be non-combustible...we have used silicone, etc. which is good to 500F +. But the Rutland or even drywall stuff should do.
Small gaps in mortar can be repaired with a special high-temperature caulk called refractory caulk. It contains silica for heat resistance and is specifically designed for fireplaces. This fix is a fairly quick, easy, and inexpensive process.
Ideal temperatures for mortar are between 60 °F and 80 °F (15.6 °C and 26.7 °C). Mortar temperatures over 120 °F (48.9 °C) may lead to flash setting, resulting in lower compressive strength and reduced bond strength. Thus, do not heat sand or water above 140 °F (60.0 °C).

You can seal off an unused fireplace by installing wood or light-gauge metal framing, insulation and drywall over the entire wall or opening. If you intend on using it in the future, install an insert constructed out of 2" rigid foam board glued to MDF. Seal around the insert using neoprene backer rod insulation.
Adhesive Strips. Available at many hardware and home improvement stores, small rolls of fiberglass-based stripping can be cut to size and applied in noticeable gaps between an insert and the masonry on the outside face of a fireplace, underneath the insert.
