Honjō MasamuneThe Honjō Masamune represented the Tokugawa shogunate during most of the Edo period and was passed down from one shōgun to another. It is one of the best known of the swords created by Masamune and is believed to be among the finest Japanese swords ever made. It was made a Japanese National Treasure (Kokuhō) in 1939.
The most precious one was a Kamakura from the 13th century which he sold to an anonymous collector for the impressive sum of $418,000, making it the most expensive katana ever sold.
However, archaeologist Marcella Frangipane of Rome University unearthed nine swords dating all the way back to 3300 BCE – Frangipane declared the swords of Arslantepe the world's oldest and first swords ever discovered.
Researchers have found a collection of rare artifacts at Vindolanda, a Roman cavalry fort along Hadrian's wall in Northumberland, England, reports the BBC. Among the artifacts are two rare cavalry swords and two wooden toy swords, similar to those still made today.

With a good razor sharp katana you could easily slice someone to pieces, with a well made solid rapier that can also cut you could easily defeat a katana. Most of the time, the European with a rapier would win for all the reasons described in other answers.
