The alliance of Ricks planned to destroy C-137 before he could kill again. Instead, he nearly wiped them out. The remaining survivors pledged fealty to Rick and together they built The Citadel.
As was explained during the finale for season five, Evil Morty was attempting to escape a never-ending cycle, wherein the Ricks put together an existence for the Mortys of the multiverse to always be "enslaved" to their respective Grandfathers.
Conversely, Season 5's finale offers the first definite deep dive into Rick's backstory.

Interestingly, while he remains identical throughout the series, Rick has occupied the body of one of his alternate selves, having taken over his mind during the Season 3 premiere. Since then, this body has been destroyed and he now inhabits a clone of this Rick's body.
