Can thinset be used for floor leveling?

You can use thinset to install tile over an uneven cement floor and leave the floor perfectly level. You can also use thinset mortar to level out an uneven cement floor or fill small holes in the floor without installing tile.

Is thinset the same as self-leveling compound?

It's the same way thinset and self-leveling work. Thinset (aka the bed sheet) is difficult to get perfectly level, so you need a very strong flooring type to hide any “imperfections.” Ceramic, glass and stone tile floor coverings work great with latex-modified thinset.

Can I use thinset to level wood floor?

Because mortar will stick to the concrete slab and the wood subfloor, and mortar will stick to mortar, then it would only make sense that mortar would work for leveling or patching, right? Well, the answer is actually no. Mortars cannot be used to level or patch a floor – ever!

Can I put thinset over self-leveling compound?

3 Answers. Yes you must remove all of the thinset - FOR SURE. Thinset is not meant to be exposed and a leveler on top of it will not protect it enough.

How thick can I lay thinset?

The terms thinset cement, thinset mortar, dryset mortar, and drybond mortar are synonymous. This type of cement is designed to adhere well in a thin layer - typically not greater than 3/16th thick.

What happens when thinset is too thick?

In addition to producing an uneven surface, applying too much thinset can create costly cleanup headaches and add unnecessary time to a project. Simple installation rules eliminate the possibility of this potential problem.

Can you pour concrete over thinset?

Thinset is a Portland cement product that hardens to a concrete finish beneath the tiles. If you have old thinset still on the subfloor, it is possible to tile over it, but you may need to prepare the floor in one of several ways first.
