After many more voyages and expeditions, Drake was made a vice-admiral in the English's battle against the Spanish Armada in 1588. Drake died of dysentery on 28 January, 1596 off the coast of Panama, and his body was put to rest in a coffin buried at sea.
His watery grave has never been found. In 1595, an aging Sir Francis Drake set off on a final voyage to prowl the West Indies. His fleet was gunning for Spanish treasure, but an early attack on San Juan, Puerto Rico was repulsed, as was a second raid on Panama.
