Seeing Mia alive on the helicopter seems a logical explanation as to why she does not have a headstone beside of Ethan's, as she was never dead during the events of the game - and likely is still alive in Resident Evil Village's post-credits scene.
As it turns out, Mother Miranda kept Mia alive so that she could conduct experiments on her. Chris manages to free Mia from her cell, and then he tells her that Mother Miranda killed Ethan. However, Mia then reveals to Chris that Ethan is "special" and it is unlikely that Miranda actually succeeded in killing him.
It turns out, as a matter of fact, that Chris was actually trying to save Ethan and Rose, though not for the reasons prevalent theories attached to his motivations after just viewing that first scene. The real reason he shot Mia has to do with the game's big villain, Mother Miranda.
Mia Winters Character Profile | Resident Evil Village (Resident Evil 8) The former handler of Eveline and wife of Ethan Winters makes a return in Resident Evil Village.
She cannot resist the grasp of Eveline and loses control while pushing him aside. Grasping in pain, she pulls out a knife and starts to come after Ethan. After attacking her with a crowbar, Ethan ends up stabbing her through the chest ending her life as she turns into dust.
It turns out that the actual Ethan Winters died all the way back in Resident Evil 7, after succumbing to a punch and kick by Jack Baker. However, his exposure to the mold gave him incredible regenerative powers. Due to this revelation, Ethan is able to live even when his heart is ripped apart from his body by Miranda.
After being presumed dead in 2014, she was recovered by the Baker family, and resided under lock and key at their property until being re-discovered in mid-2017. After Eveline's death, Mia and Ethan started a family again and Mia gave birth to their daughter, Rosemary Winters.
After defeating Mother Miranda, Ethan's powers appear to be waning, with his hands starting to turn white and crumble like so many of the bosses he's defeated over the course of the game. It could certainly mean Ethan survived the explosion he found himself in when destroying the Megamycete.
The reason Chris Redfield gunned down Ethan's wife at the start of the game is because it wasn't Mia at all. It was Miranda. She showed up at Ethan's house to kidnap his baby, Rose, because she has special powers from the “Mold.” Miranda was hoping to use Rose's body as a vessel for her own dead daughter, Eva.
It's most likely that she knew that Ethan was infected due to his insane survival and his ability to meld his hand back together. It could also be that she slowly figured it out while they are living together or rather that, she knew since the end of RE7 but didn't want to say anything.
Spoiler RE8: Is Ethan Winters actually dead in Resident Evil Village? - Quora. Ethan Is Definitely Alive, He is one of the few people who can control the virus (mould) and regenerate himself, so he is definitely alive, and I do not believe Capcom would kill him off like that.
Simply put, you cannot kill Lady Dimitrescu until you progress the story enough to where she transforms and a boss fight ensues. You would simply be wasting your bullets if you try and take down Lady Dimitrescu permanently before the story allows you to do so.
After beating Lady Dimitrescu and leaving the castle, Ethan finds out a horrific truth: Rose has been dismembered, her different parts stuck in flasks and given to the Four Lords. Under the advice of The Duke, Ethan is determined to gather all the flasks and save his daughter.
Some may initially write off Ethan's inhuman ability to heal and revive as video game magic, but the unforgettable plot twist confirms that Resident Evil Village's Ethan Winters has already died.
